Development of Single Follicular Hair Transplant Technology
Early in 1939, during the Second World War, Dr. Okuda of Japan invented
the surgical transplantation. This transplantation has been applied
mainly on the baldness caused by burning.
After then in the year of 1943, Dr. Tamura of Japan developed the
technique as presently used for hair transplantation. However, due
to the war, that transplantation has not yet been well developed
and widely spread.
In 1950, Dr. Norman Orentriech of the United States of America firstly
presented the ‘4mm Diameter Scalp Punch-out Transplantation’
speech.
Finally, in the year of 1955, Dr. Rassman of the United States of
America invented the ‘Single Follicular Transplantation Technique’.
Traditional techniques utilized circular punches of scalp, or "plugs,"
that contained 15-20 hairs each. These transplanted hairs tend to
be congested and typically yielded a very noticeable, unnatural
result - commonly referred to as "dolls’ hairs. As technique
improved, ‘Single Follicular Transplant’ becomes the
main stream for the hair transplanting. Use of very small micro-grafts,
called follicular units to be implanted onto the designated area
one by one, now allows the creation of highly aesthetic and natural
hairlines.
Characteristics and Effectiveness of Single Follicular Transplantation
The side and back of scalp is called the permanent hair
bearing scalp because hair follicles in these areas are genetically
less sensitive to the effects of DHT, a male hormone that cause
hair loss. Therefore these permanent hairs will remain permanent
regardless of where it is transplanted, a phenomena termed "donor
dominance." This is the basis theory of hair transplantation.
Actually, there is no method that can create more hair follicles
medically. All forms of hair restoration surgery involve redistribution
of permanent hair follicles of oneself.
Single Follicular Transplant works well on all stages of hair loss,
like receding hairline, forehead and upper head baldness or even
baldness caused by scars or injuries. This technique fully utilizes
the characteristics of the “Donor Dominance”
which means no matter where the follicle has been transplanted to,
the attribute of ‘continuously grow and never falling’
will still be retained. The single follicle will
be implanted to the designed area one by one so as to get a natural
result.
The result is so promising, prominent
and most of all is permanent. The growth rate of
the follicle can be reached around 90% or more.
Scope of Treatment
- All stages of hair loss
- Hairline modification
- Receding hairline modification
- Forehead and the crown area’s hair thickness modification
- Baldness caused by scars or injuries
Procedures
Hair transplantation is a day-surgery procedure done under local
anesthesia involving removing a strip of permanent hair-bearing
skin from the back or sides of the scalp (Donor Area). The strip
is then carefully dissected with the help of the finest micro-instrument
and magnification into single follicle containing 1-3 hairs. The
donor area is then sutured and hidden by the surrounding hair. The
micro grafts are meticulously planted into the bald area of the
scalp (Recipient Area). Up to 2500 follicles can be done in one
single session.
The Procedure includes 2 parts
First part: This procedure will take about 1 hour.
1. Doctor will discuss with the client for the location and design
of the hairline.
2. Local anesthesia and conscious sedation will make the procedure
smooth and comfortable.
3. Donor hairs are taken from the back of the scalp where the hairs
are most abundant and healthy for transplantation.
The one under treatment take 2-3 hours of rest.
Second part: This procedure will take about 2-3
hours (depends on the number of hair to be transplanted).
A special instrument, the ‘Hair Implanter’, which is
designed to handle a single follicle of hair, is used for implanting
the follicles into the designated area one by one by our doctors.
After care
After the treatment, normal cleansing and caring of the hair can still
be applied. Though, the implanted hair will fall out initially, the
follicle will stay there. 8 to 10 weeks after, the new hair will grow
out from the follicles. In 6 to 8 months’ time, the expected
result will be seen.
